With a focus on evidence-based advocacy and programming, LWU’s research and development efforts aim to generate knowledge, build capacity, and drive positive change within the LGBTQ+ community and society at large.

LWU has embarked on a transformative journey to address the systemic challenges and injustices faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda. Recognizing the urgent need for accurate data, research, and evidence to inform advocacy efforts and policy-making, LWU has prioritized research and development initiatives as essential components of its work.

Key Areas of Focus

Understanding the Lived Experiences: LWU conducts qualitative and quantitative research to document the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda, including the challenges they face, their resilience strategies, and their aspirations for a more inclusive society.

 

Legal and Policy Analysis: LWU engages in legal and policy research to analyze the impact of discriminatory laws and policies on the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ minorities in Uganda. This research informs advocacy efforts aimed at promoting legal reform and challenging discriminatory practices.

Health and Well-being: LWU conducts research on LGBTQ+ health issues, including access to healthcare services, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, mental health support, and reproductive health rights. This research informs the development of targeted interventions to address the specific health needs of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Social and Economic Empowerment: LWU explores the socio-economic challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda, including employment discrimination, housing insecurity, and economic marginalization. Research findings inform the design of economic empowerment programs and advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting social inclusion and economic justice.

Impact and Outcomes:

Through its research and development initiatives, LWU aims to achieve the following impact:

v  Increased understanding of the challenges and needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda.

v  Enhanced capacity of the LGBTQ+ community to advocate for their rights and well-being.

v  Improved policies and practices that promote equality, inclusion, and social justice for LGBTQ+ minorities.

v Strengthened partnerships and collaborations with stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners.
